Professor Nataliia Ivanivna Voloshchuk has been associated with the Department of Pharmacology of the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsia, since the very beginning of her academic career. From 1990 to 1993, she completed her postgraduate training at the Department. In 1993, she joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001, and became Professor of Pharmacology in 2013. In March 2015, she was appointed Acting Head of the Department, and since November 2015 has served as Head of the Department of Pharmacology. This period marked the beginning of a new stage in the Department’s development, characterized by continuity with the traditions of the Vinnytsia School of Pharmacology, expansion of research areas, and modernization of educational approaches.
In 1994, under the supervision of Professor O. O. Stoliarchuk, N. I. Voloshchuk defended her Candidate of Medical Sciences dissertation entitled “Effects of Cardiac Glycosides and Their Combinations with Selected Cardiotropic Agents on the Electrical Stability of the Myocardium” in the specialty of Pharmacology. In 2011, she defended her Doctor of Medical Sciences dissertation, “Sex-Related Determinants of the Pharmacological Activity and Toxicity of Modern Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs”, under the scientific consultancy of Professors O. O. Pentiuk and H. I. Stepaniuk.
Professor Voloshchuk’s scientific interests have developed within the traditions of the Department’s school of experimental pharmacology. A substantial part of her research has focused on fundamental pharmacology, particularly the role of biological factors in determining the efficacy and toxicity of medicines, the principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, and the identification of factors capable of modifying pharmacological responses. One of the major areas of her research is the preclinical evaluation of potential medicines with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, neurotropic, and organ-protective properties.
An important component of her scientific work is the investigation of the biological and pharmacological role of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). This research direction, initiated by N. I. Voloshchuk under the mentorship of Professor O. O. Pentiuk, was subsequently developed in collaboration with Professors N. V. Zaichko, A. V. Melnyk, and other researchers of the University. Between 2019 and 2023, these studies were conducted within a research project addressing the role of exogenous and endogenous sulfur-containing compounds in the mechanisms of internal organ injury and cytoprotection. The findings provided a foundation for further investigation of the H₂S system as an endogenous regulator of pathological processes and pharmacological cytoprotection.
Another major area of research is the search for novel analgesic and neurotropic agents. Through long-standing collaboration with the O. V. Bogatsky Physico-Chemical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and InterChem, a comprehensive series of preclinical studies was performed on propoxazepam, an original 1,4-benzodiazepine derivative. The compound demonstrated analgesic and anticonvulsant properties in various experimental models, including models of neuropathic pain. The priority of these findings has been confirmed by patents granted in Ukraine and by international patent offices, while the experimental data obtained contributed to the scientific rationale for the subsequent clinical development of the compound.
This research area has been further expanded through studies of original macrocyclic derivatives of γ-aminobutyric acid, aimed at identifying novel compounds with analgesic and other neurotropic properties and at elucidating their mechanisms of action and safety profiles. This work continues one of the defining traditions of the Vinnytsia School of Pharmacology - the comprehensive investigation of an original compound from initial pharmacological screening to an in-depth assessment of its pharmacological profile.
Professor Voloshchuk also maintains long-standing scientific collaboration with the National University of Pharmacy. Together with researchers from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, more than 130 benzothiazine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives have been investigated. Among them, compounds with pronounced analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anticonvulsant activities, as well as promising safety characteristics, have been identified. Another area of joint research has focused on the experimental evaluation of medicines as potential frigoprotective agents under conditions of acute and chronic cold injury.
In recent years, the range of scientific research conducted at the Department has expanded considerably. Particular attention is being given to biologically active compounds of plant origin, organ-protective agents, and neuropharmacology, including experimental modelling of traumatic and neurodegenerative disorders of the central nervous system, memory and cognitive dysfunction, and the search for new approaches to their pharmacological correction. Since 2024, these and related areas have been integrated into the Department’s research project “Investigation of the Pharmacological Properties of Biologically Active Compounds of Plant and Synthetic Origin” (State Registration No. 0124U00015).
A major part of Professor Voloshchuk’s academic activity is devoted to the training of young researchers and academic staff. Under her supervision, nine dissertations leading to the degrees of Candidate of Medical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy have been successfully defended by I. V. Taran, N. V. Zhaboiedova, S. A. Koniukh, O. V. Malchenko, P. S. Bondarenko, A. V. Yukhymchuk, O. R. Matiash, M. L. Zastryzhna, and H. L. Halevych. New PhD projects are currently in progress under her supervision, together with ongoing doctoral research.
Professor Voloshchuk successfully combines scientific activity with teaching and curriculum development. During her leadership of the Department, traditional approaches to pharmacology education have increasingly been complemented by clinically oriented and simulation-based learning. Practical clinical scenarios are incorporated into teaching, student research activities, and subject Olympiads. In 2026, the second round of the Pharmacology Olympiad was held for the first time in a simulation-based format, using scenarios that reproduced emergency clinical situations.
Professor Voloshchuk places particular emphasis on working with students and involving them in scientific research. The Department continues its long-standing traditions of the Student Scientific Society, participation in the “First Step into Science” student research conference, subject Olympiads, and creative pharmacology events. Modern educational formats - including simulation scenarios, team-based pharmacotherapeutic problem solving, elements of gamification, and the “Pharm Show” - complement conventional pharmacology teaching and are aimed at developing clinical reasoning and the ability to make well-grounded decisions regarding the choice and use of medicines.
As Head of the Department, Professor N. I. Voloshchuk continues the scientific traditions established by Professors O. O. Stoliarchuk and H. I. Stepaniuk, while at the same time developing new areas of experimental pharmacology and interdisciplinary collaboration. The Department’s current activities combine fundamental pharmacological research, the search for novel biologically active compounds, the training of young scientists, and the implementation of modern educational technologies. This continuity of scientific tradition, together with openness to new ideas and approaches, defines the present stage of development of the Vinnytsia School of Pharmacology.
